Two people were injured in an off-road accident around 5 pm Saturday near the Creston area of Cumberland County.

Local businessman Russell Smith and his wife Carol were riding in their side-by-side ATV when it overturned in the woods. Carol was able to lead first responders to their general location via cell phone.  Rescuers began the search for the couple off Shoemake Road but were hindered by the rugged terrain.   By around 5:45 pm first responders were able to transport Mr. Smith on a side-by-side to an area accessible by helicopter.  Around 6:15 pm, Mr. Smith was loaded into an Erlanger Health Life Force helicopter and in the air before 6:30 pm.

Mr. Smith is reported to be in serious but stable condition.  Mrs. Smith was treated and released from Cumberland Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
