VANDERBILT’S SARAH FULLER BECOMES FIRST WOMAN TO PLAY IN A POWER 5 CONFERENCE FOOTBALL GAME
Vanderbilt soccer player Sarah Fuller made history yesterday afternoon when she officially took the field with the football team for its game against Missouri.
Fuller became the first female to play in a Power Five college football game after she kicked off for the team in the second half
The senior from Wylie, Texas, played every minute this year for Vanderbilt’s title-winning soccer team.
She saw an opportunity with the football team after Vanderbilt struggled with their kicking game. The presumed starter opted out and several others were out because for contact tracing with COVID-19.
That is when Head Coach Derek Mason contacted Fuller to see if she wanted to try out.
And with the football team struggling in its kicking game after the presumed starter opted out and several others were sidelined by contact tracing, Fuller got a call to try out.
“The fact that I can represent all the girls out there that have wanted to do this or thought about playing football or any sport really, and it encourages them to be able to step out and do something big like this, it’s awesome,” said Fuller.
Asked yesterday following the game if Fuller will kick again for the team, Coach Derek Mason said that decision is now up to her.
