Growing up in a military family, Dick lived in many areas of the country, as well as attending high school in Japan. He graduated from Colorado State University (Colorado A&M when he started as a freshman) in 1960 with a degree in wildlife biology. Having completed ROTC training in college, Dick joined the army and served for four years in the 82nd Airborne Division and 503rd Military Police Battalion out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, before being honorably discharged at the rank of Captain. Dick and his family moved to Crossville, Tennessee, in 1973 where he became the TWRA big game biologist for Region III until his retirement in 2000. Since retirement, Dick enjoyed traveling both domestic and abroad with Linda and with Steve, spending time with grandchildren, and being an avid sports fan. He is preceded in death by both of his parents along with his sister, Dorothy Rhodes.

He is survived by his wife, Linda, of Crossville, his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Katy, and his three grandchildren, Maddie, Ellie, and Max Hurd.  A private family memorial service is planned.
