TENNESSEE TEENAGERS HANDS AND FEET REMOVED BY DOCTORS AFTER FLU-LIKE SYMPTOMS

Mathias Uribe is 14-years-old from Sumner County, Tennessee.

His parents became very concerned when Uribe displayed flu-like symptoms.

He got worse and was hardly able to breathe.

Uribe went to Monroe Carrel Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome.

When his lungs began to fail, Uribe was placed on life support. An ECMO machine pumped blood in Uribe’s body for about two weeks. His body struggled to pump blood properly, causing the skin on his hands and feet to turn gangrenous.

They eventually had to amputate his hands and feet.

Doctors added this was a rare case. There was nothing his parents could have done sooner to prevent it.

Uribe will be in the hospital for at least another month before being set up with prosthetics and undergoing rehab.

Physicians remind parents to make sure their children receive flu shots. If symptoms of the flu worsen, parents should take their child to an emergency room for treatment.
