OVER 410,000 VOLVO VEHICLES RECALLED FOR REARVIEW CAMERA ISSUE
Multiple news outlets have reported that Volvo Car USA has issued recall 25V908, affecting approximately 413,151 vehicles in the U.S. market, primarily model years 2021–2025 across various models including the XC40, XC60, XC90, S60, S90, V60, V90, V90 Cross Country, C40 (including BEV variants), and 2025 EC40 and EX40. This recall replaces an earlier one (25V282) after customer complaints revealed that the previous software fix was insufficient. The issue involves the rearview camera image potentially failing to display—or becoming temporarily unavailable—when the vehicle is shifted into reverse, which reduces rear visibility and violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111. This standard requires the rearview image to appear within two seconds of selecting reverse, and any delay, loss, or non-display during reversing renders the vehicle noncompliant and increases crash risk.
The problem stems from a software defect in vehicles equipped with Google-built-in infotainment systems, produced from September 8, 2020, onward (starting with 2021 XC40 models up to April 21, 2025, for certain 60-series vehicles). Volvo’s investigation concluded on December 19, 2025, with dealers notified on December 23, 2025. The remedy is a free revised software update, which can be applied at dealerships or via over-the-air (OTA) delivery; the software is expected to be available nationwide by the end of March 2026. Customer notification letters are scheduled to begin mailing on February 16, 2026. Even vehicles previously addressed under the prior recall (25V282) will require this new update.
The text also provides context on production origins—such as the S60 assembled in South Carolina, S90 and V90 from China, and others from Sweden or Belgium—and highlights Volvo’s 2025 U.S. sales performance, with 121,607 total deliveries led by the XC60 (41,105 units) and XC90 (40,217 units), followed by the XC40/EX40 lineup (23,980 units). It notes current U.S. pricing for select models (e.g., XC40 starting at $41,295, EX40 at $56,545, EX30 at $40,345, and EX90 flagship at $81,290) and mentions that all internal combustion Volvos use 2.0-liter turbo gasoline engines paired with eight-speed Aisin AW transmissions. No crashes, injuries, or fatalities have been reported in connection with this issue as of late December 2025. Owners can contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-458-1552 or check NHTSA.gov for eligibility using their VIN starting February 16, 2026.
