Charles Edward Hewston, 56
Charles Edward Hewston, lovingly known as Charlie, passed away on January 20, 2026, in Knoxville, Tennessee after a brief illness. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, the late John and Regina Hewston. Charlie’s life was deeply shaped by the love and care of those who became his chosen family. He was taken in and embraced by the family of Lloyd and Jean Gilreath, whose kindness and support meant more to him than words could express. He was also important and cherished by Florence Fitzgerald, where he found connection, belonging, and love. He is survived by his siblings, Regina Hewston and John Hewston of Long Island, NY, and Susan Brown of Chattanooga, TN. He is uncle to Katie Brown of Abingdon, Virginia and Jack and Grace Hewston of Long Island, NY. Charlie was blessed with many special friendships that brought him joy and companionship throughout his life. He shared a close bond with Mary McDermott, her daughter Leslie, her granddaughters Riley and Carly, and Oakley (his beloved canine friend). He also held dear friendships with Kelle Shultz and her mother Barbara (MH) Shultz. Special mention is reserved for Poppy, Kelle’s four-legged companion, who Charlie loved fiercely and whose loyalty and comfort were a constant presence in Charlie’s life. Charlie held a special place in his heart for his dear friend, Leigh Ann Peterman, whose friendship meant so much to him throughout his life. A special acknowledgment to Nicolas Hall and Annettee Stapleton for their friendship, care, and kindness during his illness. Charlie worked at Knoxville Habitat for Humanity until his passing and took great pride in being part of a team that helped the community. His work family will miss his humor, dedication and heart. He was always available to help. “Charlie, can you come to the front” was heard frequently during the day, for the customers who wanted to see him, and the volunteers who needed his leadership. A special and loving acknowledgment is extended to his Aunt and Uncle Pam and Fred Stout, whose care and presence held a meaningful place in Charlie’s life. He loved them dearly. Charlie will be remembered for the connections he formed, the loyalty he showed, and the quiet but lasting impact he had on those who knew and loved him. His memory will live on in the many lives he touched and the families who were honored to call him their own.
