Hobert Lynn “Bear” Philips peacefully passed away at his home, in Wartburg, TN on September 19, 2026, surrounded by the comfort of the place he called home. Hobert was born February 7, 1964 at his family homeplace in Briceville, TN. As a child, Hobert attended Rosedale School, where he remained until completing the 8th grade. Hobert spent many days working with farm animals, tending to the garden, and adventuring through the woods that he loved so dearly. As an adult, Hobert married Cindy Marie Phillips, and he continued to find joy in the mountains. He loved to ginseng, hunt, and fish, and there was hardly anything better to him than being outdoors. He took great pride in teaching his boys the way of life he had learned during his many days in the mountains, passing down the knowledge, skills, and love for nature that meant so much to him. When he wasn’t outdoors, you could find him relaxing in his recliner, watching his favorite westerns and enjoying time with his family he loved so dearly. His greatest joys were found in the simple things of life. If you knew Hobert, you knew he always had a joke to tell, and a way of making everyone around him laugh. He had a way of brightening every room, and had a laugh that was contagious and something you’d never forget. Each morning he enjoyed waking everyone in his house up with his singing, and making sure his presence was known. His laughter and playful spirit will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

Hobert Lynn was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cindy Marie Phillips; his parents, Lillie Maxine Hinkle Phillips and Hobert Phillips; his son, Charles Ray Phillips; his daughter, Candy Phillips; his parents-in-law, Charles Homer Phillips and Bertha Mae Phillips; his brother, Roger Lee Hinkle; his nephews, Ronnie Lee Hinkle, Everett Lindsay Lee “Buddy” Carroll, Jacob Carroll, and Jonathan Phillips; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Janice Hinkle, Everett Carroll, Penny and Anthony Carroll; and his grandson, Jamon Carroll.

Hobert Lynn is survived by his children, Clayton Ray “Junior” Phillips (Anna), Ashley Blanco, Brandon Welda, Kaylee, Shyann, and Danielle Phillips; his grandchildren, Brooklyn Mae, Nicholas, and Isayah Phillips, and Gavin Cole; his siblings, Ronnie (Vernice) Hinkle, Suzannah Carroll, Byrd (Loretta) Phillips, and Sherman (Susan) Phillips; his brother and sister-in-law Mike Phillips, and Carolyn Weldon ; his nieces and nephews, Tracie Richards, Lonnie (Terri) Hinkle, Maxsrine “Maxie” Daugherty, Suvannah (Daniel) Ivy, Robert and Michael Phillips, Dylan Carroll, and Mikey Phillips along with his many extended great-nieces and great-nephews. Hobert also leaves behind his lifelong best friend Jimmy Dean Byrge who shared countless memories, laughter, and adventures with him throughout the years. Their friendship was a cherished part of his life and will be deeply missed..

Hobert will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but his memory will live on through his family and the many lives he touched.

The family will receive friends on Friday, September 25, 2026 from 5-7 pm Schubert Funeral Home, Wartburg. Funeral services will follow at 7pm with Bro. Jimmy Byrge officiating. Graveside services will be Saturday 11:00 AM Rock Hill Cemetery, Briceville, TN.
