ACTOR GEORGE SEGAL PASSES AWAY AT AGE 87

Hollywood icon George Segal has passed away at the age of 87.

Segal appeared regularly on ABC’s “The Goldbergs” and was nominated for an Oscar in 1967 for his supporting performance in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”

The famed drama saw him play the character Nick opposite screen legends Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. Taylor won an Oscar for her performance as did co-star Sandy Dennis. Like Segal, Burton was nominated.

The actor’s final episode of “The Goldbergs” will air on April 7, 2021. An on-air tribute is also expected. In the sitcom, he played Albert “Pops” Solomon, a grandfather to three children in the 1980’s.

ABC paid tribute to the actor:

“For eight years, George Segal made us laugh as Pops on ‘The Goldbergs,’ but his legacy in the entertainment world spans decades. His talent has left an indelible mark and we’re grateful for the laughter and joy he has given us all,” the network said. “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his wife, Sonia, and his family during this difficult time.”

Among his other notable roles were his Golden Globe-winning performance as Steve Blackburn in “A Touch of Class,” as well as the role of Jack Gallo in “Just Shoot Me!” and his breakout performance as Dr. Tony ‘Shiv’ Parelli in 1964’s “The New Interns.”

Segal was also known for appearing in films directed by legends like Robert Altman in “California Split,” Sidney Lumet in “Bye Bye Braverman,” Carl Reiner in “Where’s Poppa,” Herbert Ross in “The Owl and the Pussycat” and Paul Mazursky in “Blume in Love.”

As for television, he’s appeared on high-profile shows like “Private Practice,” “Entourage,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Boston Legal.” In addition, he did several productions on Broadway, among them, “Requiem for a Heavyweight” alongside John Lithgow.

Segal was born in 1934 in Great Neck, New York. He worked in the military before going into acting.
