ANDERSON CO. COMMISSION VOTES NO-CONFIDENCE FOR ELECTION COMMISSIONER
BBBTV12 – During Tuesday evening’s meeting, the Anderson County Commission voted 10-4 in favor of a no-confidence resolution against Election Commissioner Mark Stephens. The decision came after approximately 25 minutes of discussion involving commissioners, Finance Director Robbie Holbrook, and Stephens himself, who fielded questions from the commission.
The resolution stemmed from claims by Holbrook that Stephens failed to submit budget amendments in a timely manner, an issue linked to the part-time staff needed for the most recent election. Holbrook and Stephens reportedly clashed over an email Holbrook sent requesting the amendments before a recent election commission meeting, which Stephens was unable to attend.
Several commissioners commented that the issue should have been resolved between the two offices—located across the hall from one another—before escalating to the commission. Despite this, the no-confidence vote was brought forward and ultimately approved.
The resolution calls for Commission Chairman Tyler Mays to send a letter detailing the vote to the Tennessee Secretary of State Trey Hargett, the State Election Commission, and the Anderson County Election Commission.
It is important to note that the Anderson County Commission has no direct authority over the election commissioner, who answers to a five-member election board. The board consists of Bear Stevenson, David Bradshaw, Mary Matheny, Jane Miller, and Bill Gallaher.
Tuesday’s vote underscores the ongoing tensions between the finance office and the election commission regarding operational and communication challenges.
