ARRESTS MADE IN PUTNAM COUNTY AFTER ATTEMPTED CARJACKING
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office responded yesterday to an attempted carjacking at the Corner Market Shell station at exit 273 on Interstate 40.
Upon arrival, 20-year-old Thomas Johnson of Madison County, Tennessee, was immediately taken into custody. Officers say 22-year-old Tommie Lee Smith, also of Madison County, fled but was later apprehended nearby after an extensive K-9 and helicopter search by the sheriff’s department.
The report indicates Johnson and Smith arrived in a 2002 Honda Civic at the Corner Market with car trouble. The vehicle was reported stolen from Jackson earlier in the day. Smith forced his way into another car forcing a person out of it. Smith then attempted to hit the owner of the vehicle, resulting in that automobile crashing at the scene and Smith fleeing on foot.
Johnson was arrested for two counts of theft of property. Smith faces two counts of theft of property, aggravated assault, evading arrest, and shoplifting. Both were taken to the Putnam County jail.
