Aubrey Leon Barnwell, 89
Aubrey Leon Barnwell also known as “Tater”, age 89 of
Crossville, TN (Tabor community) passed away on Friday,
June 5, 2026. He was born March 12, 1937, the son of
Edwin Leon “Lon” Barnwell and Mabel Hamby Barnwell.
He worked for many years at Crossland Homes (Vindale
Corporation) in Crossville and for the City of Crossville
from 1984-1996, where he retired from the Street
Department.
Aubrey was a kind and gentle soul who never met a
stranger. He spread love by helping others. He loved to
ride his golf cart around the neighborhood and was given
the unofficial title of Mayor of Tabor Loop. He could
often be seen sitting on the front porch of his home
watching his hummingbirds and the wildlife. The pride of
his life and greatest joy were his grandchildren and great-
grandchildren. He was a member of Pine Grove Church of
God of Prophecy.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Lozena Wyatt
Barnwell. Children- Greg (Darlene) Barnwell, Robin
(Mark) Mickelson, Marc (Pam) Barnwell, all of Crossville,
TN. Grandchildren- Portia (Johnny) Shanks, Tandi (Stacy)
Swafford, Brandon (Amy) Elmore, Cody (Alicia) Elmore,
Casey (Ashley) Barnwell, Crossville, TN and Markie
Barnwell, Mesa, AZ. Great-grandchildren-Brady, Aubrey,
Landry and Kingsley Shanks; Sadie and Tatum Swafford;
Kiptyn, Kanon and Kolton Elmore; Syler and Isaiah
Elmore; Ellie Barnwell; Madilynn Hill.
Brother- Doyle (George Ann) Barnwell; Sister- Charlotte
Tabor and was preceded in death by his brother, Dwight
Barnwell.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at Pine Grove
Church of God of Prophecy 1171 Lawson Rd, Crossville,
TN, beginning at 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. The service will be on
Wednesday, June 10 at 1:00 p.m. at Pine Grove Church
and officiated by Bishop Rick Lyles and Bishop Jack
Lawson, Sr. Pallbearers will be grandsons- Johnny Shanks,
Stacy Swafford, Brandon and Cody Elmore, Casey
Barnwell and great grandsons- Kiptyn Elmore and Brady
Shanks.
Burial to follow service in Green Acres Cemetery by Hood
Funeral Home, Crossville, TN.
