Ava Dean Lancaster, age 72

Ava Dean Lancaster, age 72, of Nashville, TN, passed away at her home on April 11, 2022.

She was born on September 26, 1949, in Crossville, TN, daughter of the late Ava Glen Smith and Martha Dean (Hill) Smith.

Ava, or Deanie as she was known by many, loved her family and friends fiercely.  Ava and her beloved Lex were married for 36 years.  He was truly her soulmate.  They supported one another in every aspect of life and had many great adventures together.  Although they did not have any children of their own, they loved John, Martha, and Cory as if they were their own.  And then came the great-nieces and nephews, they brought her so much laughter and joy.  Deanie was the monarch of the family to her sister Pam and brother Kenny after their parents passed away.  Ava was a friend to all.  She looked forward to book club and coffee with her dear friends.  She was thrilled to organize and plan the Class of 1967 CCHS high school reunion.  She was overjoyed to spend time with old friends and share great memories.  She enjoyed sharing a funny banter on social media, crosswords, learning, and traveling.

Ava was a graduate of St. Thomas School of Nursing in Nashville, Tennessee, obtained her BS in nursing at Excelsior College, and a Masters in Administration from University of St. Francis.  She demonstrated excellence in nursing in a variety of roles, including education, infection control practice, risk management and administration.  She was a certified Professional in both Infection Control and Risk Management.  She served as President of APIC (Association for Professionals in Infection Control) and coordinated their national convention in Tennessee.  She was a sought after lecturer, both nationally and internationally, because of her extensive knowledge in practical ways sprinkled with unforgettable southern wit.  She was extremely well respected in the healthcare community in Tennessee and Florida and received multiple awards that recognized excellence in nursing.

She is survived by her Sister – Pamela Douglas (Bill); Brother – Kenny Smith; Niece – Martha Damron (Corey); Nephews – John Gunter (Amanda) and Cory Lancaster (Monica); Great-Nieces and Nephews – Emma and Thomas Damron; Molly, Noah, Ellie and Isaac Gunter; Peyton and Claire Lancaster.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her Husband – Lex Lancaster.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 15, 2022, at 1:00 PM at Bilbrey Funeral Home with Bro. John Gunter officiating.  Burial to follow at Green Acres Memory Gardens.  The Family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
