BILL TO INCREASE RECESS TIME FOR STUDENTS HEADS TO GOV. LEE’S DESK

The Tennessee legislature passed a bill (HB 0085/SB 0158) requiring elementary schools to provide at least 40 minutes of daily physical activity, amending the original 60-minute proposal.

WSMV reports this increases the current requirement of 130 minutes per week for elementary students. The bill defines physical activity as including unstructured outdoor play (weather permitting) like walking, jumping rope, or volleyball, but excludes walking to class, device use, or physical education class time.

Students cannot be denied physical activity as punishment.

The bill awaits Gov. Bill Lee’s signature.
