BILL WOULD ALLOW TEACHERS TO PERMANENTLY REMOVE DISRUPTIVE STUDENTS FROM CLASS

Tennessee lawmakers are considering a bill that would give teachers authority to permanently remove disruptive students from the classroom. The six-step process would include parent teacher meetings and interventions with specialists to identify any learning disabilities or chronic behavioral issues. If all interventions and previous steps fail, the final step is pulling a student from the classroom and working with school leadership to find an alternative learning environment. That could include a new teacher, in-school suspension, virtual learning, and more. Opponents of the bill say it would hurt students of color and students with special needs and could set them up to fail later in life. The bill passed the state house last night and now moves to the state senate for their consideration and vote.
