Blount County School director David Murrell resigned suddenly yesterday, ending 18 years of service as director and 14 additional years as assistant director.

The Blount school board will discuss hiring an interim director on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Murrell’s full email detailing his resignation reads:

Dear Team BCS:

After much prayer and careful consideration, I have decided to resign as Director of Schools effective today, January 6, 2025, and return to a tenured faculty position with BCS.

Serving as Assistant Director and Director for 14 years, 18 years at the Central Office, and a total of 27 years with the district, has given me the vantage point of seeing the very best of Blount County Schools, and for that experience, I am forever grateful.

I look forward to being your colleague, and I know that together we will continue to make Blount County Strong.
