COOKEVILLE CITY COUNCIL TO CONSIDER RESOLUTIONS REGARDING CONFEDERATE FLAGS OR IMAGES ON CITY OWNED LAND

Cookeville City Councilman Mark Miller has drafted two resolutions calling for signs to be placed around a confederate monument saying it’s not city property and to remove any confederate flags or images from city-owned land. The proposals comes after a recent attack of an individual during a Black Lives Matter protest in Cookeville. Miller said he wants the city to step up and say they do not accept the ideologies of the confederate flag. The Cookeville City Council could discuss the two resolutions in their meeting July 2, 2020.

Cookeville Mayor Ricky Shelton issued a statement stating the two resolutions were proposed with his name on them, though he had nothing to do with it. Mayor Shelton said resolutions were written by Councilman Miller and put on the city’s resolution form which have Mayor Shelton’s name and title on them.

“I’m disappointed he (Miller) chose this path which could lead to discord and division in our community instead of working collaboratively and discussing matters of concern,” said Mayor Shelton.
