Fueled by high winds and low humidity, a fire in Santa Rosa County, Florida caused the evacuation of up to 1,100 residents.

The “Five Mile Swamp Fire” started as a prescribed burn on private property Monday involving 250 acres. But drought conditions and a northerly wind fueled the flames and quickly got out of control.

Officials at the Santa Rosa County’s Emergency Operations Center last night said the fire had grown to more than 2,000 acres and was only 20% contained.

The Florida Highway Patrol shut down portions of Interstate 10 in the county.
