GOV. LEE CALLS FOR PRAYERS AS POLK COUNTY BATTERS UNDER SEVERE FLOODING FROM OCOEE RIVER

Severe overnight rainfall totaling six hours has triggered major flooding along the Ocoee River, heavily impacting Polk County in southeastern Tennessee and neighboring northern Georgia.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Morristown reported that the torrential downpour originated across far northern Georgia, swelling the Ocoee River to dangerous levels. Forecasters warn that flood conditions are expected to persist throughout the rest of the day.
In response to the crisis, the Tennessee Emergency Management Authority (TEMA) activated the State Emergency Operations Center to a Level 4 at 8:25 a.m. CT. TEMA is actively coordinating a multi-agency rescue and response effort, maintaining close communication with emergency partners in Georgia.
Governor Bill Lee issued a statement alongside First Lady Maria Lee, urging residents to support those affected.
“Maria Lee and I ask Tennesseans to join us in praying for families in Polk County impacted by flooding. Tennessee Emergency Management Authority is coordinating a whole-of-government rescue and response effort, and we are in close contact with our partners in Georgia.”

Safety Advisories

  • Avoid Flooded Roads: State and local officials urge drivers never to attempt driving through standing or moving water.
  • Follow Official Guidance: Residents should stay tuned to local alerts and comply with all instructions from emergency management personnel as river levels remain high.
