HURRICANE DELTA RAPIDLY INTENSIFIES INTO CATEGORY 2, ‘EXTREMELY DANGEROUS’ CONDITIONS EXPECTED
Hurricane Delta has rapidly intensified into a Category 2 storm, with hurricane conditions and a dangerous storm surge expected within parts of the northern Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico beginning tonight.
A dangerous storm surge will likely raise water levels by up to nine feet above normal tide levels along the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula within the hurricane warning area, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
As of 5.a.m. this morning (Tuesday, October 6, 2020), the storm was located about 420 miles east-southeast of Cozumel, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph — up from 80 mph last night. It’s forecast to make landfall on the U.S. Gulf Coast around Friday near New Orleans.
