Joyce Goddard Fischer Barkalow (1928-2026)

Joyce Barkalow, aged 97, of Crossville, Tennessee passed away on August 28, 2026.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Barkalow, Jr.; her parents, Victor Fischer and Eloise Goddard; and two sisters, Carol Huggins, and Mignonne Tauscher. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Vest; her son, Carl Barkalow; her sister, Claire Francey; and four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was born in Cranston, Rhode Island and lived in Monmouth County, New Jersey during her early life. She was a talented singer and was in several choirs. While she enjoyed many genres, she especially loved singing opera.

She married her husband, Henry, in 1950 and traveled widely given his career as an Air Force pilot. They lived in Puerto Rico, Kansas, Massachusetts, Virginia, and eventually settled in Crossville, Tennessee in Fairfield Glade.

While in Virginia, she worked many years at the Newport News Shipyard as a computer programmer, a job she really enjoyed. In her free time, she loved water skiing, horseback riding and caring for the family pets.

In retirement, she and Henry traveled widely across the U.S. in an RV. Like her husband, she loved aviation and attended many aviation events. She also took pilot lessons.
