The Move Over Law, which was signed in 2006, requires motorists to move over into the adjacent lane of traffic when safe to do so, or alternatively to slow down for emergency vehicles. In 2011, the law was expanded to include utility service equipment to the list of vehicles for which motorists are required to either slow down or move over.

Failing to do so can result in 30 days in jail and up to a $500 fine for a violation.

Representative John Gillespie is trying to raise that fine from $500 to $2,500. He also includes protection over any drivers with their hazards on as well as crews working alongside roadways. If passed, drivers would have to give anybody with their hazards in the same space that they would a Tennessee Department Of Transportation crew working.

113 TDOT employees have lost their lives while on the job since the 1940s.
