LESS THAN 2-YEAR-OLD CHILD FOUND IN ROADWAY IN WAYNE COUNTY, KENTUCKY; FATHER ARRESTED

The Wayne County, Kentucky Sheriff’s Department says a less than 2-year-old child was found in the roadway only wearing a diaper.

Deputies Jerry Meadows and Jerry Coffey responded to Old Happy Top Road late yesterday before sunset for a report of a small child in the roadway. Upon arrival the deputies observed a child being taken care of by two individuals that stated they found the child in the middle of the roadway only wearing a diaper. These individuals stated that a semi-truck was directly behind them. Deputies Meadows and Coffey located the residence of the child and had to making multiple loud knocks before the door was answered by a male subject. The subject stated he was the father of the child and had laid down to take a nap with the child around noon and did not know the child had got up out of the bed.

Deputies charged and arrested 18-year-old James Roberts of Monticello for first-degree wanton endangerment. Roberts was lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center and is being initially held without bond.

Deputies Meadows and Coffey were assisted at the scene by investigators with the Kentucky Child Protective Service.
