LG MARKS OPENING OF FIRST U.S. WASHING-MACHINE PLANT

It’s official.

LG Electronics Inc. has opened its first washing-machine plant in the United States. And it’s in Tennessee.

Company officials gathered Wednesday with local and state officials to celebrate the opening of the South Korean appliance manufacturer’s 1 million-square-foot facility.

U.S. Rep. Mark Green and Governor Bill Lee joined Economic Development Commissioner Bob Rolfe and South Korean Consul General Kim Young-jun for the ceremony.

Lee described the plant as one of the most impressive in the state.

Management has announced the hiring of 550 employees at the $360 million facility and they expect to hire as many as 150 more. Located about 50 miles northwest of Nashville, the Clarksville site selection came on the heels of a national search in 2011.

The plant will be near a new Google data center on the former site of Hemlock Semiconductor, which shut down in 2013.
