Funeral Services for Marace Johnson Matheney Jr., age 83, of Monterey, Tennessee, will be conducted on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 1:00 PM from The Chapel of Goff Funeral Home. Grandson, Daniel Matheney and Rev. Michael Lashaway will officiate with interment to follow in the Welch Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Matheney was born on Sunday, February 7, 1943, in Monterey, Tennessee, to the late Marace Johnson Matheney Sr. and Ora Faye Walker Matheney. Mr. Matheney passed away on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at the Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Mr. Matheney was a retired dispatcher with Putnam County Highways Department. He worked with Tennessee Division of Forestry. He enjoyed fishing, playing pool, hunting, boating, gardening and flowers. He was a Christian and Baptist in faith. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Peggy Buttram Matheney; sons and daughters-in-law, Frank Johnson Matheney and Ronda Matheney, Robert Ray Matheney and Lorna Matheney; grandson, Daniel and Amy Matheney; great granddaughter, Katie Matheney; siblings, Joy and Mike Callahan, Dennis and Judy Matheney, Brilla and Craig Boggs, Allen and Donna Matheney; brother-in-law, Terry Henry; and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sylvia Henry; and brother-in-law, Roger Garrett. Serving as pallbearers will be Frank Matheney, Robert Matheney, Daniel Matheney, Chris Matheney, Jason Matheney, Tim Matheney, and Tyson Matheney. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Donny Buttram, Bill “Deuce” Buttram, and Johnny Buttram. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
