Margaret J. Green, 99
Margaret J. Green, age 99, of Oliver Springs TN., passed away peacefully at her home on May 30, 2026.
Mrs. Margaret was born on May 26, 1927, in Roane County, Tennessee. She was a lifelong resident of the Cove Lane and Windrock Mountain communities of Oliver Springs, where she spent her life surrounded by family, friends, and the community she loved.
A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mrs. Margaret was a member of Indian Creek Baptist Church. She was known for her gentle and humble nature, her sweet smile, and her quiet, shy demeanor. Though often reserved and cautious, she possessed a quiet strength and steadfast faith that guided her throughout her life. Her family remembers her as a loving presence who helped keep them on the right path and whose example shaped the people they became.
Her children and grandchildren cherish many special memories with her. Dorothy especially treasured a day trip she shared with her mother to Norris, where they enjoyed watching deer and were delighted to spot a peacock in the wild. The family also fondly remembers road trips to visit relatives in Virginia. Mrs. Margaret cherished family gatherings, especially Sunday lunches, holiday celebrations, and birthdays. She rarely arrived empty-handed, often bringing her boiled ham or homemade chili for everyone to enjoy. She enjoyed playing cornhole with her family and was known to surprise her grandchildren by often beating them at the game. She also enjoyed crocheting and lovingly made blankets for her children, grandchildren, and other family members throughout the years. Those handmade gifts became treasured keepsakes and lasting reminders of her love. Margaret also enjoyed bluegrass music and traditional hymns, which brought her comfort and reflected the faith she carried throughout her life.
Mrs. Margaret had a special love for animals and believed that any animal the Lord sent her way deserved kindness and care. Whether it was a family pet, a wandering stray, or even the occasional raccoon that visited her property, she always made sure they were fed and looked after. She especially loved a cat named Smokey, who originally belonged to a neighbor but chose to stay with Mrs. Margaret after she began caring for him. Smokey became a cherished companion and a reflection of the gentle compassion she showed to all creatures. Mrs. Margaret found joy in life’s simple blessings. She enjoyed tending her flowers, reading her Bible, and admiring the solar lights that brightened her yard each evening—a gift she looked forward to receiving every birthday.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed for 22 years at the Crystal Cream Drive-In Restaurant in Oliver Springs, where she was well known and appreciated by both coworkers and customers. She became especially known for her homemade chili, which was enjoyed by generations of loyal customers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Noah Bolden and Ollie Reeves Bolden; her husband, Joseph Samuel Green; her grandson-in-law, Chris Kelly; her brothers, Martin, Robert, Carter, and Lonnie Bolden; and her sister, Bertie Bolden.
Mrs. Margaret is survived by her daughters, Lorina Patterson (Troy) and Dorothy Hunter (Gary), both of Oliver Springs; her grandchildren, Diane Kelly, Tena Tarver (Randy), Jimmy Hunter (Angie), and Jeff Cowan (Carrie); her great-grandchildren, Katie Kelly, Lucas Tarver, Gracey Tarver, Cheyenne Hunter, Daniel Hunter, Chloe Hunter, Ryan Cowan, and Cole Cowan; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many special friends.
