Patricia Sue Gernt, 84

Patricia Sue Gernt was born May 29, 1941, to Elmer and Iva Choate in Jamestown, Tennessee, and married Conrad Gernt December 21, 1963. She graduated from Alvin C. York Agricultural Institute in 1959, and from Tennessee Technological University in 1965 with a B.S. Degree in Home Economics Education. She later also obtained a Master’s Degree and a Specialist in Education Degree from the same university and spent 30 years teaching in elementary school. During her years of teaching, she taught in Fentress and Overton County, but most of her years of teaching were spent in Putnam County. After Sue retired from teaching, she went to Middle Tennessee State University and received another B.S. Degree in Journalism with a concentration in writing and graphic design.

Sue had many interests over her lifetime. She was a life-long learner and especially liked to travel, attend plays and concerts, watch British television dramas, listen to various kinds of music, work with her computer, and spend time with her family. She also enjoyed taking photographs and restoring old photographs. One of her interests was World War II, and she read extensively on the subject and visited many places in Europe where the events she read about had taken place.

Sue lived a full life and was appreciative of the opportunities she had and the wonderful people who came into her life along the way. She is survived by her son, Derek Gernt; daughter-in-law, Allison Gernt; and two grandchildren, Maci and Noah Gernt; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Stewart and Brenda Gernt; niece, Kelly Atkinson and husband, Shane; great-nephew, Avery Tinsley; cousins, Barbara Brown and her family and Kathy West; the families of her cousins, Helen Wilson and Carolyn Carden who preceded her in death; and many close friends from over the years.

Sue was also preceded in death by her mother, Iva Choate; her father, Elmer Choate; her husband, Conrad Gernt; and her brother-in-law, Steve Gernt. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Children of Cumberland County Chamber Orchestra.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 7 pm at Pine Grove Church of God of Prophecy. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5 pm – 7 pm, two hours prior to the service at the church. The burial will be held on Thursday August 7, 2025 at 10:00 am at Allardt Cemetery in Allardt Tennessee. The procession will leave Pine Grove Church of God of Prophecy at 9 AM.
