PROPOSED BILL BANNING SERVICE ANIMALS FROM RESTAURANTS ADVANCING IN TENNESSEE

Officials say a proposed bill in Tennessee that would prohibit service animals from being inside restaurants is moving forward.

The Senate passed State Bill 1595 this week by a vote of 88-4. It still needs to pass the state House of Representatives. The legislation would keep live animals out of food service establishments and would give restaurants the power to turn away patrons with pets.

Some lawmakers say too many pet owners are calling their dogs “service animals” or “emotional support animals.”

The law pertains to service animals, emotional support animals, and patrol dogs with police or security officers. The bill says “service animals accompanying persons with disabilities in areas that are not used for food preparation” would be prohibited. This includes animals that are untrained or are being trained, like puppies.

Lawmakers are hoping to bring a similar bill to grocery stores next year.
