PROPOSED BILL WOULD IMPOSE NEW PENALTIES FOR PASSING STOPPED SCHOOL BUSES

A bill proposed in state legislature would require school buses to install exterior cameras to record drivers of vehicles who pass stopped buses.

A first violation, based upon evidence provided by a school-bus driver and installed cameras, would be considered a non-moving traffic violation. A second offense would fall in line with current law, which states passing a stopped school bus is a Class A misdemeanor.

The bill is being considered in the Safety and Funding Subcommittee.
