A new bill being considered by Tennessee lawmakers would require students in kindergarten through third grade to attend summer school if teachers believe it is needed.

House Bill 1692 would require any child in grades K to 3 which “does not show a basic understanding of the curriculum and ability to perform skills required of reading” or for the next grade level to attend summer school.

The student’s grades and standardized test results along with the teacher’s determination that the student may benefit from the option. In addition, school boards for schools would have to approve a research-based “intervention program” designed to help students recommended for summer school to help them succeed. If a parent were to choose to not sending the child to summer school, it would result in the student repeating the grade the next school year.

If passed, the bill would go into effect for the 2020-2021 school year.
