Ray A. Melton, 84

Ray A. Melton of Decatur, Tennessee, went to be with Jesus his Savior on June 18, 2026, at the age of 84.

Ray was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, son, and friend. Known affectionately as “Grandpa,” he invested much time and love into the lives of his children and grandchildren. He was a mentor, encourager, and true friend to each of them. His legacy is an immeasurable gift for which we praise God!

Ray dedicated his life to serving God, his family, and his community. He was an accomplished builder and was gifted in working with wood. He had a passion for the outdoors and enjoyed farming, raising and training horses and dogs, and gardening.

Ray committed his professional career to serving students. After teaching Drafting and Woodworking for some years at Bearden High School in Knoxville, he moved back to Meigs County and served as K-12 principal for a decade, followed by working for many years as Supervisor of Instruction with the Meigs County Board of Education. He made it a point to personally connect with students, understand their needs, and do all he could to help them attain their goals. His commitment to education made a positive impact on many. Ray also Served the town of Decatur as: Alderman, Police Commissioner, Vice-Mayor, member of Planning Commission and founding member of the Park Board.

Ray displayed unwavering dedication to his faith, both by living out a daily Godly example and by serving as a deacon and Sunday School teacher for over 60 years, currently serving at Genesis Baptist Church in Athens, TN. He was a strong spiritual leader for his family and loved them sacrificially.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Glen and Lora Mae Melton. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Brenda Edgemon Melton; children, Angela Sheree (Tony) Ellis, Sharon Renae (Ken) Wallace, and Cheryl Kay Melton; grandchildren, Nathan Ray (Stefani) Ellis, Garrett Marshall (Rachel) Wallace, Julie Alyse Ellis (Sam) Beary, Greyson Taylor Wallace, Melody Faith Ellis, Abby Elyse Jones, Ally Sydney Jones, Jenna Thuy Ellis, Mia Hope Ellis; great-grandchildren, Shepard Anthony, Braylen Ray, and Baker Uriah Ellis, Hanley Coggins, Kaleb Nathaniel and Brooks Michael Beary, Romee Rae Wallace; sister, Faye (Gene) Phillips; other extended family and many wonderful friends.

A Family Funeral Service will be held at 11:30 am on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, in the chapel of Decatur Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Pastor Pete Mullins officiating.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon – 2 p.m., following the service.

Ray will be laid to rest at Edgemon Cemetery in Ten Mile, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Edgemon Cemetery Fund by mailing payment to: Edgemon Cemetery, 2100 Ten Mile Rd. Ten Mile, TN. 37880
