ROANE STATE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S GOLF MAKES BIG MOVES

The Roane State Community College men’s golf team is set to compete in the NJCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship for the third consecutive year, scheduled for May 20–23, 2025, at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Indiana. Following a fifth-place national finish in 2024, the Raiders, led by head coach Chris Griffin, are riding a wave of late-season momentum and improved team chemistry.
Griffin highlights the team’s focus on mental toughness, bolstered by weekly sessions with the University of Tennessee’s sports psychology department, as a potential edge against the nation’s top junior college teams. The program, revived by Griffin in 2018, has gained national recognition, supported by elite facilities like Oak Ridge Country Club and top-tier coaches, including Tony Wright and Charlie Isham.
With a strong family atmosphere, including parents attending the championship, the Raiders aim to make a mark while representing the Roane State community.

Meanwhile, the Roane State women’s golf team is currently competing in the 2025 NJCAA Division II Women’s National Championship, held May 13–16 at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone, Iowa. This marks the first time Cedar Pointe, known for its challenging 18-hole layout with mature trees and water hazards, hosts the event.
Despite being a relatively new program, the Lady Raiders have made significant strides, winning their first Region 7 championship in May 2024 and earning a national ranking in August 2024. Under the leadership of head coach Rick Maharry, who joined in August 2024 with over 50 years of golf experience, the team has shown notable improvement in both technique and mental resilience.
After the first round, Roane State ranked 11th with a team score of 62-over par, led by sophomore Georgia Cater’s 8-over performance. Athletics Director David Lane praised the team’s rapid development and national presence.
