SECOND SERIOUS CRASH IN AS MANY DAYS REPORTED ON “THE DRAGON”

Two people were hospitalized Tuesday after a car struck their motorcycle along a stretch of Highway 129 in Blount County commonly called “The Dragon.”

It was the second crash along that section of roadway in as many days.

The unidentified victims on the motorcycle were both transported to U.T. Medical Center. No one in the car was injured in the crash, but Blount County deputies cited the driver.

On Monday, another serious motorcycle crash happened along “The Dragon” near the North Carolina state line, around mile marker 9.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol reported that motorcyclist failed to negotiate a curve and was thrown from his bike 30 to 40 feet down an embankment. He was flown to U.T. Medical Center.

A spokesman from the Blount County Sheriff’s Department says deputies make extra patrols along The Dragon daily from April through September. Authorities said they receive state and federal grant funds specifically to fund those summer patrols, due to the larger number of incidents along that stretch of road during this time of year.
