TENNESSEE BANS TEACHING CRITICAL RACE THEORY IN SCHOOLS
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed a bill that bans teachers from instructing certain concepts of race and racism in public schools. Lee said students should learn “the exceptionalism of our nation,” not things that “inherently divide” people. The legislation takes effect July 1, 2021. It states Tennessee’s teachers can’t instruct that “an individual, by virtue of the individual’s race or sex, is inherently privileged, racist, sexist, or oppressive, whether consciously or subconsciously.” The penalty for disregarding the new law could include the state education commission withholding funds from any school found to be in violation.
