TENNESSEE BILL SEEKS TO PROMOTE ABSTINENCE, PROHIBIT CONTRACEPTION DISTRIBUTION IN SCHOOLS

A bill under consideration by the Tennessee senate would prohibit family life curriculums in the state which distribute contraception at public schools and focus on promoting abstinence.

State Bill 1392/House Bill 0577 calls for the prohibition of promoting any gateway sexual activity and the distribution of materials on school grounds which might condone, encourage, or promote sexual activity. If passed, it would ban contraception distribution on school grounds unless it is “medically accurate information about contraception and condoms” as long as students are informed “only abstinence removes all risk” of sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy.

The bill is scheduled to go before the state Senate this week.
