TENNESSEE LAWMAKER PROPOSES FREE SCHOOL LUNCH LEGISLATION

NASHVILLE, Tenn.–A Tennessee lawmaker is proposing legislation that would provide free school breakfast and lunch to students.
Representative John Ray Clemmons (D-Nashville-55) is the sponsor of HB0012, which creates such a program for students in each school district.
Under the bill, the state would reimburse each local education agency (LEA) for the cost of providing a free breakfast and lunch to each student after all federal funds available through the national school lunch program have been used. If passed, the bill would go into effect on July 1, 2025, and then be applied to the 2025-2026 school year and each year thereafter.
