Thomas David Burgess, 78
Thomas David Burgess was born on Christmas Eve in 1947 to Raymond and Flossie Burgess in Toccoa, Georgia. From the very beginning, Dave lived a life defined by dedication, service, and deep love for his family and community.
He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps, carrying that same sense of duty into his lifelong commitment to public service. Over the years, Dave faithfully served Cumberland County as Judicial Commissioner, Chief Deputy with the Sheriff’s Department, and County Coroner for more than two decades. He later continued giving back as a member of the Cumberland County Planning Commission.
Dave also valued hard work and personal growth, earning a bachelor’s degree in Business. He went on to build a successful career in property management, working with both timeshare resorts and residential properties, and later in property development. Yet, of all his accomplishments, what brought him the greatest joy was simply being with those he loved and spending time at his workbench pursuing his passion for gunsmithing.
Above all, Dave was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Velma Smith Burgess; his children, Valerie Lankford (David), Olana Burgess Thompson (Glenn), and Thomy Burgess (Ashleigh); along with several cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His legacy of love, strength, and service will live on in all who knew him.
Services will be on Thursday, April 16, 2026. Visitation will be held at Crossville Memorial Funeral Home from 11:00am to 1:00pm. A Graveside service will follow at Lantana Cemetery, Hank Jones and David Lankford officiating.
