Vinson Vaughn, age 95

Vinson Vaughn, age 95 of Crossville, TN passed away   June 24, 2022. He was born January 24, 1927, in Martha Washington/Clark Range, TN the son of Charlie and Lina Wilson Vaughn.  At a very young age, Vinson enjoyed rising early to make breakfast with his beloved mother while the others in his family slept. He was a hard worker at a young age. Vinson talked about at the age of 14 how he would ride on a wagon with men from his community to Oak Ridge TN to work on the railroad. He lived and farmed in Grassy Cove where he and his wife Christine began raising their family. At some point, after this, he moved his young family to Dayton Ohio. Here he had many different jobs including working for Huffy Bikes and Leland Electric. At one point he co-owned Van Co Sealant. He also worked in construction where he worked his way up to bricklayer and washer. He was hired by Knowlton Construction, who built schools, hospitals, and municipal buildings. It was here that he was involved with building many schools, hospitals, and even part of Wright State Univ. in Dayton Ohio.

Vinson came back to Crossville to help in the construction of North Cumberland Elementary in the ’70s. He began building his home here and when construction of the school was completed he remained at the school as a custodian. He moved his family to their new home when the basement was completed during this time. Vinson remained at North Cumberland for 30+ years. He loved every child who came through that school as much as he loved his own. During this time he continued to garden, work in the hay, and had a few livestock. He loved being outside the most. He was an avid gardener and loved to watch his vegetables grow. He was the neighbor you could depend on if you needed anything. He retired at the age of 80 to take care of his beloved Christine he also continued to take care of the home place. He loved nothing more to pour you a cup of coffee and feed you if you stopped by.
