76-YEAR-OLD TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AFTER FATAL SHOOTING IN KNOXVILLE
KNOXVILLE, TN- Just before 6 PM on Thursday, May 18, 2023, Knoxville Police Department officers responded to a shooting with a victim at 3253 Wilderness Road.
Officers arrived on the scene and located a woman in the backyard of the home who had been shot at least one time. The victim was pronounced dead after being transported from the scene.
Responding officers learned that the suspect, who was identified as 76-year-old John Deloach, had shot the victim following a dispute and barricaded himself inside the home prior to officer arrival.
Crisis Negotiators and Special Operations Squad personnel responded to the scene in an effort to safely take the suspect into custody.
Crisis Negotiators were able to establish rapport with the suspect and remained in regular communication with him until, at around 8:52 p.m., he voluntarily exited the home and was taken into custody.
Detectives with the KPD Homicide Unit have obtained a warrant charging Deloach with first-degree murder.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
