78-YEAR-OLD MAN BECOMES VICTIM OF TARGET/ XFINITY SCAM

On Dec. 5, a man stopped by the Fairfield Glade Police Department regarding a possible scam. He claims he had been contacted by a person he believed was Xfinity/Comcast. He stated they informed him about a deal they had going on and they had teamed up with Target so his bill for Xfinity would be $50.00 dollars a month.

He said he paid $110.00 dollars a month and this seemed like a good deal, so he continued listening to the caller. They informed him he needed to purchase two Target Gift cards for $330.00 dollars, and this would be applied to his Xfinity account. He asked them why gift cards, and they informed him since they had partnered with Target this was part of the plan.

He went to Kroger in town, purchased the cards, and contacted the caller who worked with Xfinity and gave them the card information as they asked. They were able to pull up his Xfinity account and show him where that money had been added to his account and now, he was covered. He thought he was good to go, but later received another call from the same person claiming he needed to send more money and he became alarmed.

The person he spoke with told him if he did not send them anymore money, they would completely shut off his account. This was upsetting for him because he has had this account with Xfinity for years since before his wife passed away. So, once again he purchased two
more cards for Target at the Krogers in town but, this time he saw the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office station and decided to speak to Deputy Fatima Pena.

She advised him this was all a scam and there was no deal with Xfinity teaming up with Target. She told him he should not send them the information on the other two cards, but instead take them back and try to find a way to get his refund.

The man said the person who called him was very upset and he was scared they would be turning off his Xfinity. However, Pena had seen this scam before, just one of many.

She told him to contact Xfinity and ask them about this deal and they would inform him they did not have this deal. She gave him the number to the real Xfinity and advised him to contact them to put some peace in his mind.

She told him the money on the two cards was likely gone, but the two other cards still had the money and he could contact Kroger or Target to get it back.

He said he would do this and left.

The next day, the man returned to the station to say he had contacted Xfinity in Oak Ridge, who informed him Deputy Pena was correct and there was no deal going on for $50.00 dollars a month partnering them with Target.

He had stopped by Kroger and had gotten the number for Target and would be contacting them regarding the cards.
