TENNESSEE LAWMAKER PULLS ‘MASK AND HOOD’ BILL FOR CONSIDERATION

State Senator Jon Lundberg pulled a proposed bill banning the wearing of hoods and masks to hide one’s identity after backlash from the community.

The original bill states it would penalize anyone who wore a mask, hood or any device to conceal the identity of a person. Violation would have been a Class A misdemeanor.

Senator Lundberg said the intent of the bill was never to ban hoodies or other clothing articles people wear on their head and face, but instead make it illegal for those who would commit crimes with a hidden face during rallies and demonstrations. The bill was aimed at people and groups whose members have become violent at rallies.

Another reason for pulling the proposed law is to clarify several items in it. A new version of the bill should be ready later this year.
