FIRE AND EXPLOSIONS REPORTED AT BAYOU STEEL IN HARRIMAN

Just before noon Saturday, a host of Roane County fire agencies responded to a fire call inside Bayou Steel Company in Harriman.

When they arrived, they discovered smoke coming from the southend of the building.   Once inside, the fire crews an employee on site was welding when apparently a spark hit some debris igniting the fire which then spread to a pick-up truck and some welding tanks creating several small explosions. The fire was extinguished after about 20 minutes.

No one was hurt according to officials and the fire departments were on the scene about an hour and a half before the all clear was given.

Bayou Steel filed for Bankruptcy in October of 2019.  The plant was closed shortly thereafter.
