AT MIDNIGHT TONIGHT, TENNESSEANS WILL BE PAYING MORE FOR GROCERIES

As of Wednesday at midnight, Tennessee’s 3-month grocery sales tax holiday is over.  The tax cut was part of Governor Bill Lee’s Tennessee Works Tax Act, which contained a $400 million tax cut, the largest tax cut in state history.

Tennessee has the sixth-highest grocery sales tax in the nation: a 4 percent state tax in addition to local sales tax.  As of Wednesday, that sales tax will be added back to Tennessean shoppers’ bills.

According to the Tennessean, the grocery sales tax holiday saved the average family about $100 over the 3-month period.

Tennessee is one of 13 states that still imposes a sales tax on groceries.
