NCDOT SAYS I-40 GOING TO NORTH CAROLINA IS INDEFINITELY CLOSED

Reports from the North Carolina Department of Transportation state that I-40 and I-26 near the Tennessee/ North Carolina state line will be closed in both directions for 43 miles indefinitely as crews rebuild interstates and roads heavily damaged by Hurricane Helene and the subsequent floods.

The October 2025 date listed on NCDOT’s website is a placeholder until further notice.

TDOT said those going to North Carolina should follow I-81 North to Virginia, then take I-77 South to North Carolina.

Currently, TDOT doesn’t have an estimation as to when I-40 or I-26 near the state line will reopen.
