PUTNAM SHERIFF WARNS OF BITCOIN SCAM

From the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office:
Sheriff Farris and the PCSO have been made aware of multiple scams circling, specifically those requesting payments in the form of Bitcoin by depositing money in cryptocurrency ATMs. Scammers may claim the payment is needed for overdue bills, missed court dates, or a family emergency. Scammers may also claim to be local law enforcement, public officials, or government agencies.
REMEMBER: The Sheriff’s Office will NEVER ask for payment in Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency, nor will we request payment over the phone.
Please be mindful that a criminal will prey on the most vulnerable, remember these tips to not fall victim to these scams:
• Hang up on any suspicious calls or do not answer
• Never send any money or Bitcoin/cryptocurrency to someone you do not know
• Scammers will tend to use your phone number and/or address as a scare tactic since it is your personal information, but it is also public information
• Never give out any personal information or financial information
When in doubt, always call your Putnam County Sheriff’s Office for advice before sending money or revealing any personal information. Please report scam activity and (931) 528-8484.
