THE GREAT KENTUCKY GNAT INVASION

WBKO in Kentucky reports that residents of Logan County, are facing a severe gnat infestation, particularly near Logan Aluminum’s recycling facility in Lewisburg, prompting some, like 90-year-old Ila Thomas, to consider selling their homes.
The gnats, which residents link to the facility’s storage of sticky, recycled aluminum bales since 2019, have made daily life unbearable, invading homes, food, and personal spaces. Traps capture thousands of gnats daily, and the issue has disrupted routines like cooking and childcare.
A lawsuit against Logan Aluminum, Novelis Corporation, and Tri-Arrows Aluminum claims the facility’s operations are responsible. Residents, including Thomas’s grandson Josiah Head and his family, report inadequate responses from the company, which has denied most claims but acknowledges community concerns. A legal hearing is set for August 21.
