LEAD SINGER OF GOLDEN EARRING HAS PASSED AWAY AT AGE 77

George Kooymans, the co-founding guitarist and co-lead singer of the Dutch rock band Golden Earring, has died at the age of 77. He passed away on July 23, 2025, due to complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which he was diagnosed with in 2021. The band disbanded in 2021 following his diagnosis.
Golden Earring, known for their hit “Radar Love”, was formed in 1961 by Kooymans and his neighbor Rinus Gerritsen. The band achieved international success, particularly in the early 1970s, and remained active for six decades. Kooymans also pursued solo projects and contributed to other artists’ work, including helping Anouk’s breakthrough.
In 2021, Kooymans announced his retirement due to ALS, and the band subsequently disbanded. The remaining members of Golden Earring are planning a farewell benefit show in Rotterdam in January 2026 to honor Kooymans and raise money for ALS research. The show will feature guest musicians.
