MONROE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE ISSUES ALERT ON SCAMS

From Sheriff Tommy Jones:
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is once again warning the public about scammers who are becoming more sophisticated in their attempts to defraud residents of Monroe County.
These criminals are using the names of law enforcement officers-found by simply searching online-and spoofing actual Sheriff’s Office phone numbers to make their calls appear credible. The scam centers around claims that include (but is not limited to):
Outstanding arrest warrant for failing to report for Jury Duty
Outstanding arrest for other criminal infractions
Family member(s) have been arrested/or will be arrested
The caller then pressures the individual to make an IMMEDIATE payment to avoid arrest. The scammers often demand payment through cash apps, Western Union, prepaid gift cards, or other untraceable methods.
REMINDER:
Law enforcement will NEVER call demanding money to resolve a warrant or jury duty issue.
If you receive a call like this DO NOT give them any money or personal information.
HANG UP IMMEDIATELY and then contact the Sheriff’s Office or local Police Department directly to verify.
If you have been contacted by one of these scammers, please report it.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office first alerted the community about this scam on August 12, 2025, and we are reminding everyone today because scammers are once again active in our area.
For more information or to report a scam call, contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at (423) 442-3911.
