PIKEVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT WARNS OF GHOST TAPPING SCAM

From the Pikeville Police Department:

According to the Better Business Bureau, new technology is giving rise to new scams—and one of the eeriest is called “ghost tapping.” It’s not a haunted house trick… it’s a real threat to your wallet.

Scammers use hidden wireless readers to steal contactless payment info from your card or mobile wallet—without you ever knowing. It can happen in crowded places like festivals, checkout lines, or public transit.

• Pose as vendors and rush you to “just tap” without showing the amount.
• Use malware to hijack mobile wallets and authorize purchases remotely.
• Relay stolen card data to a “mule” who makes fraudulent purchases elsewhere.
