OVER 330K HYUNDAI AND KIA SEDANS RECALLED FOR FUEL PURGE CONTROL DEFECT
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a recall of over 250,000 Kia K5 sedans (2021–2024 model years) and approximately 85,000 Hyundai Sonata sedans (2020–2023 model years) due to a defect in the fuel purge control system. A check valve that directs airflow from the charcoal canister to the engine can deteriorate over time, allowing pressurized hot air to enter the fuel tank.
This can cause the tank to expand and contact hot exhaust components, potentially leading to melting and a fuel leak if the vehicle is driven extensively in that condition. Warning signs include an illuminated check engine light, popping noises from the fuel tank area, and rough engine performance.
Affected owners will be notified by mail and can check their vehicle’s status using their VIN on the NHTSA website. Dealers will replace the faulty valve, inspect the fuel tank for damage (replacing it if necessary), and Kia will reimburse owners for any prior related repair costs.
