Hugh Melvin Johnson, 85
Hugh Melvin Johnson, affectionately known to generations simply as “Coach,” passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. A lifelong resident of Kingston, Tennessee, Hugh devoted his 85 years to faith, family, and the community he loved.
Born and raised in Kingston, Hugh’s roots ran deep in Roane County. After graduating and beginning his career in education, he spent more than 40 years as a teacher and coach, shaping countless young lives both on the field and in the classroom. Known for his steady guidance, firm but fair leadership, and trademark encouraging smile, Coach Johnson became a mentor to many and a cherished figure in local athletics. His former students often said he taught far more than the game—he taught character, discipline, and heart.
For 64 years, Hugh was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Peggy Johnson. Their enduring partnership was a testament to love, loyalty, and the quiet strength found in a life built together. Hugh was a family man through and through, happiest when surrounded by loved ones, sharing stories, laughter, and the wisdom earned from a life well lived.
Hugh’s legacy lives on in the thousands of lives he touched—as a teacher, a coach, a neighbor, and a friend. He will be remembered for his compassion, integrity, and unwavering commitment to lifting up others.
He is survived by Peggy, his loving wife of more than six decades, son Chris (Donna) Johnson, son Gary (Lucy) Johnson and daughter Kim (Greg) Clark, grandchildren Brittany Taylor, Gunnar Johnson, Macy (Logan) Hawks, Blake Endicott, Josh Johnson, Tanner Eaton, Colby Johnson, and great-grandchildren Jolee Taylor, Maddie Taylor and Ember Hawks. He is preceded in death by his loving parents Hugh L. and Lucille Johnson.
